DEVELOPMENT OF VEGETABLE GARDENS IN THREE SENEGALESE PRISONS FOR THE SOCIAL REINTEGRATION OF PRISONERS

Location Sénégal
Duration 21 months. Will commence as soon as funds are sourced.
Main focus Intergration

In Senegalese prisons, detainees are malnourished and forced into idleness. They see their physical and mental health deteriorate during their time in prison. Their chances of reintegration are diminished by these shameful living conditions.

Creating and caring for a garden will allow prisoners to reconnect with the land, produce the foods needed for good nutrition, but also the opportunity socialize and unwind.

The National Association of Senegalese Prisons, our local partner, has already recorded a huge success with a kitchen garden in the biggest prison in Dakar (Rebeuss). The deployment of this successful program will therefore become useful for setting up vegetable gardens in three other prisons in Senegal.

To contribute to improving the living conditions in prisons in addition to the social and even professional integration of detainees through learning the basics of vegetable cultivation (growing carrots, potatoes, onions, eggplants, cabbage, lettuce and parsley). The project will equally play a part in solving the malnutrition problem in prisons.

Three prisons/ a breakdown of the different stages of the program and their costs:
Participant training (detainees): > CHF 1’488
Planning > CHF 7’950
Maintenance and support > CHF 13’248
Project management > CHF 6’048

Total : CHF  28’734

Amount needed : CHF  20’000

Your individual contribution would aid in :

  • Acquiring carrot seeds for CHF 20
  • Acquiring a pack of seeds (eggplants, onions, cabbage, lettuce, potatoes) for CHF 100
  • Equipping a garden with water pumps for CHF 500
