prj_wanda

The aim of the project is both reconciliation, by encouraging dialogue between the survivors and former prisoners through doing hands-on work together: “building houses”, and the fight against extreme poverty through activities that generate income.

  • To provide shelter for the homeless and a means to subsidise their needs (survivors, former prisoners, the displaced) Deadline for the completion of the last homes: April 2018.
  • To improve the daily life of the beneficiaries by creating cooperatives which generate income from animal rearing and agriculture.
  • To prioritise and encourage Reconciliation.

More than 20 years after the genocide, Rwanda still has to cope with its consequences. Since 2003, tens of thousands of criminals have been freed and more than 50 000 prisoners are about to be released. This means that both those who survived the genocide and the former perpetrators will have to learn how to live together again.

Since 2011 until now, thanks to Chryzalid’s support, the survivors and former perpetrators have settled in 90 houses built for the   90 families who participated in their construction.  Some of them were trained as social workers and agricultural agents.
